Thurs 20th October 2011 - Orpington CC young leaders collect certificates at Lords

Many congratulations go to George Nicholas, Piers Shimwell, Harry Graham, Matt Andrews, Sam Coleman, Dan Goodwin, Steve Cole, Matt Williams and Tom Austin (not pictured) who have successfully completed their Young Leaders in Cricket Award and received their certificates from Adam Ball, Kent 1st XI and England U19 captain, in a ceremony at Lords on Sunday 16th October.

In order to gain their awards the boys completed two 3 hour modules where they learned the skills of what to coach and how to coach young cricketers including activities and games, providing instruction and demonstration and maintaining a fun and safe environment.
They also completed the ECB ACO Young Officials course, learning the roles and responsibilities of umpiring and scoring and the Institute of Groundmanship course where they learned to understand the tools and machinery used for effective maintenance of sports pitches and the setting out and marking of cricket pitches and squares.
The final part of the award was a First Aid Awareness course where the boys learned how to assess an incident, treat wounds, bleeding and minor sports injuries such as sprains and strains. They also learned to recognise and treat conditions such as asthma, heat exhaustion, bites and stings.
As well as attending the course they each completed in excess of 20 hours volunteering at the Club. They helped the coaches at Under 11 training sessions and officiated at Under 13 matches as well taking their turn to umpire at senior matches. They also helped at Club social events.
The Young Leaders in Cricket Award has provided all the boys with the necessary tools to improve their own games, given them the added confidence to volunteer by gaining skills and competency and has allowed them to give something back to the wider community.
Orpington’s MP Jo Johnson was also present at the ceremony and was very impressed with the initiative which is sponsored by his brother’s Mayor’s Legacy Fund. He was presented with a club cap by Ian Coleman, Chair of Colts and Club Coach.
