Under 16 - Match Reports U16 vs Bexleyheath - Friday 17th June 2005
Orpington 183-4 (24 ovs.)
Bexleyheath 127-7 (24 ovs.) Orpington Won by 56 runs.

A fantastic batting performance saw that we comfortably made it 4 wins on the bounce. And at the halfway stage of the season, we sit 7 points behind the leaders with a game in hand.

The captain lost the toss for the 3rd game running, and we were stuck into bat on a rather green looking wicket.

Although the ball was jagging about, Toby and Sam saw us off to a fantastic start, going at 6 an over without seemingly trying. But then Toby was given out LBW somewhat unfortunately, to a ball which hit him on the very top of the pad playing forward… (for 31). Despite this setback, Sam carried on the good work, but eventually fell for an excellent 42. 2 ducks aside (Tommy and Ralf), it was left to the skipper and Greenly, just as it had done the previous Sunday where they shared a partnership of 110. And once again, a century partnership was produced, 102 unbroken in 9 overs. The partnership included 6 overs in a row which went for 12, 13, 12, 13, 13 and 18. Quite incredible stuff!!! Despite one run-out scare, they were both not out at the end. Joe Greenly on 37, and the Captain on 48.

It was always going to be an uphill struggle for Bexleyheath, but we had shown the previous week that scoring at 8 an over is no problem. And to be perfectly honest, we were never going to lose the game from the moment that we took the field for the start of the second innings. Have-a-game Greenly opened the bowling, and returned figures of 3-1-9-2. Very impressive indeed, although he didn't need to do the showboating one handed catch on his caught and bowled… Bebbo opened the bowling form the other end, and with his parents watching, produced a fine spell of bowling. He was half an inch away from a hat-trick, which would truly have sealed the win. Ralfy came on as first change, and bowled very economically, 4 overs for 8. The captain brought himself on for a 2 over spell, and removed their main batsman… 2 overs 2 maidens, 1 for 0 was just what was needed. Sam Reed bowled 3 overs for 24, not his finest hour, but didn't bowl as badly as the figures suggest. Nishank somewhat amazingly bowled 3 overs reasonably well, and only went for 16 runs. Well done Nishank!!! And I'll just skip to Ben Greenly's 2 overs at the end which produced his 1st wicket for the U16's, and wrapped up the victory.

Now, you may be thinking that that was that, but it wasn't, as I have eluded from one of the greatest spells of bowling ever seen at the Bexleyheath Cricket Stadium. You could sense the anticipation as he was warming up - Clive, AKA Pagey, AKA Harbajahn bowled 2 overs, 1 for 17. And this devastated the Bexleyheath supporters. They had heard of his reputation before now, but never had they seen such a beautiful spell of bowling since Matt Dennington took 6-26 a few years back. Although his first 2 balls went for 8, he wasn't put off, and the Bexleyheath fans knew it wouldn't be long before he unleashed the magical mystery ball. And there it was… the 4th ball of the over. To a mere mortal it looked to be a wide until it pitched, but then it amazingly spun in at least a metre, as Harbajahn knew it would and hit middle-and-leg… The batsman of course, was completely bamboozled, and trudged off wondering what on earth had happened to him.

This just about capped off what had been a superb performance, and if we can keep it up for the remainder of the season, that league trophy will be ours…
