Under 16 - Match Reports U16 vs Sidcup - Friday 10th June 2005
Sidcup 186-4 (24 ovs.)
Orpington 190-3 (23.1 ovs.)
Orpington won by 7 wickets.

A quite astonishing game, which had everything. It all stated with things not looking to good on the weather front, as black clouds surrounded the ground. But the match got underway, in rather gloomy conditions.

After loosing the toss, the captain opened the bowling from the top end, and was rather unfortunate not to pick up a wicket or 2. A couple of LBW shouts, which on another day maybe would have been given. Despite this, Sidcup got off to a good start and were going at more than 9 an over. This could have had something to do with the way that we fielded. The worst fielding performance, probably in club history, but definitely for this age group. Dropped catches, countless misfields etc etc. The bowling wasn't the worst, but is normally a lot better. However Sam Reed bowled a good spell, and ended up with two wickets. And Priyanga chipped in with one as well. But the opener was still there, and if we kept feeding his leg-side swing then we would have been chasing 250. So back on came the skipper for his remaining over, and he got the big breakthrough, with a plumb LBW. This left Sidcup 4 down with about 7/8 overs to go, but we couldn't get any more wickets. We were all praying for rain at this time, but our prayers were not answered, as it rained, but not heavily enough to stop the game. So Sidcup finished with 186, at just a fraction under 8 an over.

From the different moods in the camps at the break in innings, you would have thought that the game was already over, and it appeared that way. There was no way we could score at 8 an over for 24 overs… or was there???

Toby opened with the skipper, but was too scared to take the first ball, so the skipper was left open to the embarrassing possibility of a diamond duck. But fortunately he survived, taking 9 off the over. So there it was for them, the biggest challenge of their careers so far I imagine. Both of them were really up for it, and if the 4 ball wasn't there they tried to work the singles. They were steadily going along at 6/7 an over for the majority, and the victory looked almost certain if they were both there at the end. But just after the captain had brought up his half century, disaster struck… He was bowled by a ball which kept a bit low and cut back in. There was still a chance however, as Reedy came out to join Toby. They stuck together for a long time, Toby bringing up his half century in the partnership. So it came down to 36 off the last 4 overs, and this is when we got a little helping hand from the oppo… Toby managed to get 7, by not hitting it off the square. He placed it into a gap, ran 2, then got an overthrow, and then got 4 more overthrows! Now you got the feeling that the victory was most definitely on… 15 off that over meant 21 off 3. And although Sam was run out in the over, it was still a good one for us. Sam may only have got 2, but he played a key role in supporting Toby. A couple of wides and no-balls along with a boundary or two (one brilliant shot from Priyanga) meant that we only needed 1 off the last over, and Toby duly obliged with a 4 from the first ball, at a little past 9:15. There was a delayed reaction from the spectators, as it was too dark to see where the ball had gone, but they soon realised, and the victory was complete.

What a game! Probably not summed up too well by this report, but if you were there watching you would have fully understood how good it was. This means that the OCC U16's are 2nd in the table with a game in hand!!!
