Under 16 - Match Reports
U16 vs Chis & West Kent - Friday 8th July 2005
Orpington 159-5 (24 ovs.)
Chislehurst & West Kent 117 All Out (23.2 ovs.)
The meeting of the 2 best teams in the league was eagerly anticipated by all around the world. But the weather threatened to play havoc with proceedings, as when the away side arrived there were puddles. However, to not disappoint the huge crowd in attendance, the game went ahead. The toss was won by the away captain, and he wasn't quite sure what to do, so rarely had he won the toss this season. "We'll bat." Although the wicket was wet, with the OCC being a bat-first club, it just had to be done.
Although it was not looking the shrewdest of decisions at 22-3. Ganwar got out on the one hand-one bounce ruling, introduced for these new revolutionary internationals. Toby gave one of the fielders catching practice, and Ralf tried to hook one which was about 5 foot above his head, and got a nick. So that left it down to I.T and Greenly. A partnership of any sort was desperately needed, and the 56 they put on steadied the ship. (In these conditions, the ship was definitely needed.) But then disaster struck as Greenly was run out, somewhat unfortunately, for a well made 24. This brought Chris to the wicket, and he did his job of sticking around very well. Meanwhile, the skipper was taking on the responsibility, and smashing the bowling all round the park, including 11 4's and 3 6's. The partnership with Chris ended in the last over, when Chris was bowled. But he had done his job, although he only got 1 in a partnership of 72. So that brought Tommy to the wicket for the last 2 balls. And 3 balls later (including a wide) he walked off with 8 not out… The captain finished with what would prove to be a match-winning 85 not out.
It was quite clear from the start, that Chislehurst had 3 main players, and if we could get rid of them, we were well on our way to victory. Although doing that proved a little more difficult than some thought. They got to 58, ahead of the run-rate, before the skipper got the all important breakthrough, well caught by Tommy at backward point. And then there was another bonus a couple of overs later, as the other opener pulled one straight to I.T at mid-wicket, off Ralf. So there was just one more big wicket to fall, and Phila got it, as the batman top-edged one, and Phila took an easy return catch. So the big three were gone, and it was left to us to clean up the tail. Lawrence was a bit unlucky in his spell, as was Greenly, but Phila, Ralf, and Nishank all bowled superbly. And then there was Mr Meyers, with his 2 wickets at the end. Getting out yet another boy who was less than half his height and age. 2 run outs, and 3 stumpings by Toby helped the cause, but even so it was an excellent performance. The great Russell May was in attendance, and he too was impressed.
So, with 2 games to go, our destiny is in our own hands… If we can win next week, or even just avoid defeat, the league is ours!!!
