Under 16 - Match Reports
U16 vs Bickley Park - Friday 6th May 2005
Orpington 97-5 (24 ovs.)
Bickley Park 54-5 (14 ovs.) - (Match Abandoned due to Bad Light)
Orpington U16's were on the verge of a great start to the season, when the light brought an abrupt end to proceedings.
Things were destined to go wrong when Bickley turned up a good 40 minutes late, but there was not one complaint from the good-natured Orpington lads, who just got on with the job in hand. The skipper won the toss, to give him a 100% record for the season, and chose to take first use of the wicket. Batting first on a now customary OCC wicket, with variable pace, and even more variable bounce, the hosts made a respectable 97-5. Although after most of the top-order had failed, the decision to bat first must have looked questionable to say the least. The exception being Tommy, or Sir Garfield if you will, as he saw off the opening bowlers to score a very gutsy 18. But it was left to Gary and Joe Greenly to lead the rescue act. Riding their luck, but batting well, they put on a hugely important 6th wicket partnership of 27 unbroken. 'Gary' top-scoring with a valiant 22 not out, and Joe chipping in with a quickfire 15 not out.
A game which could have swung either way, was decided by one brilliant spell of bowling… Enter Golden arm, or Toby if you prefer. His opening spell of 4 overs, 4-5 almost certainly ending any chance that Bickley had of winning the game. Although sometimes erratic, he managed to get most of the balls in the right place, and the result was wickets galore! The other opener, Joe Greenly, kept thing tight from his end, and by the time they finished their spells, the game was very much in the hosts favour. James 'Bebbo' Bebbington was first change, and although a bit nervous, bowled quite well, and didn't release the pressure on the visitors. Then it was the turn of the skipper from the top-end, and he duly delivered with a wicket in his first over. Although dark, the game continued, until after the 14th over, with the score at 54-5, when it was getting difficult to see the batsman at the other end of the pitch… the umpires conferred, and the game was ended - both sides awarded 8 points. That was that.
Just a quick note on the dropped-catch count… as Matt Milner took an early season lead with two, one off Toby's first ball, and one off the skipper.
