Saturday 5th XI - Match Reports 5th XI vs Catford Cyphers 4th XI - Saturday 21st June 2008

The day had finally arrived for the mighty OCC to expand into un-chartered territory. After much deliberation over the past couple of years because of an occasional surfeit of senior players, it was decided to take the plunge and put out a 5th Saturday side.

This decision was initially helped by Old Colfeians who themselves were putting out an inaugural 5th team and invited us to a match.

However, when Old Colf’s had to cry off because of lack of players they did the honourable thing and gave us the hired pitch to use. Piggy managed to get an opposition from the fixture beauau and with minimal bother an OCC side was assembled.

Waring Park in Sidcup was the venue and when our oppo, Catford Cyphers 4th team stated to arrive, it was clear that the omission of either side to bring along stumps was maybe crucial to staging a game.

Therefore, Woosie hot footed it along to our nearby friends at Sidcup CC and borrowed a set of standard ash sticks.

So, we were ready to go. Woosie tossed up with their skipper who he towered over, probably for the first time ever, and duly lost the toss and the O’s were to be fielding first in a 35 over a side match.

Opening the bowling with Laurence Ives and the very impressive Rob Howard, Catford got off to a steady start until Wooz took a good running catch at mid-off from Howard’s accurate bowling.

The Great Wal was introduced in the 11th over and after the sound of creaking from his joints and a left arm that struggled to get above shoulder high on his first delivery, it was a surprise that he managed to bowl the over out. However, he ignored the pain and after seven tight overs finished with 3 for 14.

Bowling from the bottom end, Lawrence Colgan and Harry Backhouse got their first taste of senior cricket and bowled nine relatively tidy overs between them without success.

After Wal had hobbled off, Sam Coleman was introduced and should have had their dangerous left hander caught at mid-on by his father, but frustratingly for Sam, Wooz spilled the difficult chance (he has been reminded of this through the remainder of the weekend).

The captain bought himself and Pagey on to bowl the final five overs of the innings and between them picked up four wickets. Impressive performances in the field from Gary Constable and behind the stumps from Jacob Bullard helped to contain the oppo’s score, and at the close Catford had compiled 182 for eight.

After a sumptuous tea, provided by Jim and Trudy that was enjoyed, picnic style sitting on the grass, the OCC openers of H.Patel and Jacob Bullard strode out to the middle.

A very noisy and chirpy Catford side failed to interrupt the concentration of the OCC’s greatest former 1st team opening batsman and Harish and Jacob put on 31 before Bully was caught at short extra cover for 8.

Laurence Ives and Harish put on a classy 99 run partnership before H. was bowled second bounce from a looping delivery from the opposition captain. Laurence was out soon after for a commendable 25 and Woosie and Pagey nearly saw us through to the target, Pagey falling for 15 before Wooz hit the winning runs and finished with 33 not out. OCC 183 for 5 with 4 overs to spare.

A great effort by the team and special thanks to Shirley for scoring and helping to put the side together.
