3rd XI - Match Reports 3rd XI vs Gravesend - Saturday 15th May 2010
Gravesend 213 - 9 (45 overs)
OCC 143 all out
Gravesend won by 70 runs

The OCC 3rd XI travelled to Gravesend Grammar school looking for their first points of the season. Captain Neil Markell lost the toss and Gravesend decided to make first use of a pot-holed, dry, sub-standard looking pitch.

Messrs Game and Marle opened the bowling, with Dan yet again managing to choose the wrong end to bowl from, as Jon M got the ball, stopping, spitting off a length and generally misbehaving in every possible way. Credit must go to the Gravesend opener who made a sensible 50 (he should be back in their 2’s soon enough !).

The OCC bowlers fought back and despite some pretty inconsistent stuff, ended up taking 9 wickets between them. Neil Markell with 3 expensive wickets, Jon with a well deserved 2 and Gordon Hall who merited more than the 2 he ended up with.

OCC openers Andy Groves & Ian Smith departed early, both victims of the ever worsening pitch, which was now playing up at both ends !

Jon Sanders made a patient 16 before being well caught, Andy Alcock a cavalier 20 and Connor Brook a very good 24 before he fell as the last wicket with 8 balls left in the game. The new league rules meant that there was no merit in playing for the draw, so Gordon and Connor rightly decided to try for the extra point 150 would have brought.

So, a very poor pitch and some wayward bowling and no big score contributed to this defeat. Fair play to Gravesend for the better bowling and their victory.

Thank god we don’t play there every week !!
