Orpington 57/4 (6.4 overs)
Orpington won by 6 wickets
The OCC were met with sunshine for what was their 1st league fixture of the campaign, Ben skipper for the day managed to lose the toss and we were in the field early with a mixture of youth, experience... and Sir Frank. Tom Pope and Jon Marle fresh from his Morrison’s shift in the morning opened the bowling against a very young Holmesdale line-up, they both bowled good lines until Jon had the bright idea of bouncing the opening batsman only to see it disappear over deep square leg for 6. After 5 over’s each, the only success going to tom getting the opener caught at square leg captain usain called on Will Hall and Dom Grover in tandem. Dom’s first game of the season after breaking his leg walking… don’t know how! They both were rewarded for bowling straight, wickets were tumbling quickly now, Will at one stage on a hat-trick got his first ever 5-for. The better of the Clarkson family bowling right arm off spin to clean up number 10 and Holmesdale were all out for 56… many spectators and players disappointed that frank was not throw the ball at any stage from the skipper!
Opening the batting with me was John who didn’t last long trying to smash his first ball true West Indian style over midwicket only to see the ball smash middle stump. After taking 12 and 11 off the first 2 overs, I got caught at cover off a full toss! This left Jon Marle and tom pope at the wicket, the partnership didn’t really develop as Jon was bowled but tom was smashing it to all parts of the square with his tin sounding bat. In the end it was down to Will hall to hit the winning runs with Dom not out at the other end as we knocked it off inside 7 over’s.
Questions have got to be asked about the captaincy? Not giving Sir Frank a chance to bat or ball? Mike Knight coming back from Brighton to play especially and also not getting a chance to do anything!
Next week it’s Meopham, can they put up more of a fight against a deadly OCC Sunday 11?
