Saturday 1st XI - Match Reports
1st XI vs Tunbridge Wells - Saturday 30th April 2005
The first's friendly showed some positive signs for the season ahead with a victory by 5 wickets against a mixed first / second side from Tunbridge.
Early signs were not good as the OCC side trundled in an hour after Tunbridge had started their warm up. There was a definite eagerness to bat first after the late breakfast had not quite settled the stomachs from the night before.
Walking out to find a rather, and I guess traditional, OCC sticky wicket it clearly seemed a good toss to win and bowl first. The toss was won and to a resounding groan in the changing room, the reality kicked in that it was time to play cricket.
The opening session from Bradder's and Yamma showed some early season training and gym work (Yamma?) had paid off as the opposition were pinned down with the over rate beating the runs scored through 5 overs. Yamma was particularly impressive, avoiding the infamous early spray down the leg side to deliver impressive figures of 9 overs for 7 runs.
The opening pair were replaced by Alex and newly recruited Hanu. Alex delivered an excellent bowling spell and as the pressure mounted, the good looking oppositions Aussie clipped one to wicket for a great catch from yours sincerely. Tunbridge were looking a little on the racks, who other than a good performance from their opening bat looked to implode.
The skipper then came on and bowled in tandem with Alex, keeping the run rate down to a trickle with a very kind wicket to spinners aiding. A couple of dispatched loose deliveries from the Schmitter meant the figures were not as good as they should have been.
Enter Pablo.... in tandem with Alex the game really started to swing to OCC as he dispatched 3 of the opposition in his 5/6 over spell. The runs dried up and with a final dash from the Bradder's the opposition were left leaving OCC a target of 160 from the reduced 46 over game.
Now all those who have played at OCC for more than a week know that 160 can be a challenging target. Wickets were tumbling early with Geoff giving the slips some early season practice and Pabs showing us the form from one who was as familiar with his bat as a fish is with a bicycle (as Bonno would say). Enter Gooch who got the delivery of the day, one which pitch half way down and rolled crashing into the base of the stumps. Enter the OCC runs guru, Robbo and a rather shaky looking Pies. Robbo took the sword to the attack, helped from some rather generous bowling from the leggy, trying to emulate the skill of the OCC spinners. After all but sealing the game, Robbo got bored and found himself taking the long walk after skying one which was destined for the car park.
Pies played a credible support role to Robbo, showing good ability to Grind it out and was joined by Hanu who used every ounce of a prop's physic to slam a few balls to the fence before returning to the club house. Alex took his place and Pies started to join the party by scoring freely and together with a nice little cameo from Alex the game was well secured with overs to spare.
All in all a very encouraging start, showing that some of the early work is all ready paying some dividends. Well done OCC, bring on Bokke!
