1st XI - Match Reports
1st XI vs Bromley - Saturday 26th April 2008
Last weeks antarctic experience was a distant memory as the second leg of our pre season from hell (Piggy - we need to talk ! ! !) was blessed with clear skies and warm sunshine.
Once again batting first was never an option so with Wess available for the first time we looked forward to some early success.
Wess bowled well in his first appearance for the club in 3 years, he bowled with good pace and created one or two false shots but the wicket never came and with Butters punishing every loose ball we were always up against it.
Butters retired after reaching his fifty but thoughts of a youngster or 2nd teamer vanished quickly as Sheeny strode out.
We claimed a run out shortly after which only brought Dennington to the crease who quickly set about attacking everything.
Benny C took 4 overs to realise that half trackers went the distance and his frustrations were compounded after misfielding on the boundary then kicking the flag into the adjoining garden.
Sheeny perished when he was trapped LBW to Sam who responded well to his shaky first over of 5 full bungers - we believe he was under instruction to take his revision books onto the field with him so maybe lack of concentration was to blame.
A tough 40 overs climaxed with Pabs misjudging a catch that he had to move no further than 18 inches to and had at least 20 seconds to wait for so badly, that he never actually got his hands to it - you would have been forgiven for that last week Pabs but I'm struggling to find you a defence this week.
Bromley ended up 240-2 and proved that anything or poor length or width goes.
240 was always out of our reach and against tight bowling it was never really a chase.
Sheds batted well for 40 or 63 depending on whether you believe the scoreboard or the scorebook, Wess returned with a well constructed 25 or 48 (see above), George gained yet more vaulable time in the middle and made around 20.
But the loudest cheer of the day was for Woosie who, following his first ball duck at Hartley, managed to get dropped at extra first ball, he did eventually secure a run - more worryingly he chased everything in the field with more enthusiasm and at a slightly quicker pace than Benny C.
One more friendly and a National knockout game before the league starts, yes we have players still to come in but there is improvement needed in all areas or we face a nervous Summer fighting survival.
Our thanks to Bromley for hosting us and contrary to rumour many of their players stuck around for a decent beer.
