1st XI - Match Reports
1st XI vs The Mote - Saturday 24th May 2008
The Mote - 244/3 (50 overs)
Orpington - 157/10 (41 overs - P.Sheddon 89)
The Mote won by 87 runs
The day started badly with a transport crisis and never really got any better during our trip to The Mote.
Stand in skip Sanj lost the toss and we were asked to field against last years Div 2 champions, steady opening spells from Wess and Horse did not yield a wicket despite beating the bat frequently and the foundations were laid for Mote to build a score.
The breakthrough didn't come until the 20th over after after a good pick up from the Oz for a run out, possibly the only decent piece of ground fielding from the entire 50 overs.
We can never claim to be the most agile of fielding sides but Saturday was as poor as it has been; the basics of stopping the ball, picking it up and getting it in seemed alien to us and we conceded around an extra 20 unecessary runs.
Benny C returned to the side and bolwed better than on previous ocassions, Sammy bowled well and Wattsy put in a decent spell but in not taking wickets it gave our oppo the opportunity the swing their arms and the last 15 overs were painful.
Plenty of chip shots landed in gaps to frustrate us but in not taking early wickets the batters have free licence in happy hour.
So it was time to regroup over tea (I am assured there was a tea).
Within 3 overs Pabs had lost his middle stump and the Oz got trapped on his crease to leave us 10-2, Wattsy stepped up and played his best knock in the first team and he and Sheds put on 100 runs for the the third wicket.
Sheds was batting superbly and there was a glimmer of hope as the Mote noise levels dropped and we seemed to be in charge for the first time in the day.
That was until Wattsy got out to a freak caught and bowled, Wess got triggered adjudged LBW to a ball we heard he middled from 90 yards away, then Sheds persihed as he tried to force the issue and was stumped for a top class 89.
Benny C offered some resistence until he too middled one into his pads and the finger went up and the rest disappeared without trace.
The only consolation in getting rolled out in 41 overs was that we were spared an 8.30 finish, The Mote's over rate was painfully slow and if they fail to bowl sides out this season they will suffer with penalties (assuming umpires enforce this rule), but they have an attack that will worry every team. A genuine quickie will always take wickets and their overseas will run through a few sides this season.
There were some shocking decisions, one of which was potentially game changing as we all know what Wes can do, but we were second best for most of the game and probably got what we deserved.
One bowling point (and that coming in the 50th over !) was poor and only 2 batting points meant a return of 3 points to leave us rock bottom of the league.
The Folkestone game next week is now a huge game for us.
Thankfully the standard game on Sunday proved what we are still capable of, but there's certainly a great deal of improvement needed in our league performances.
