Orpington won by 3 wickets
Week 6 saw us take on newly promoted Tenterden.
After two wins on the bounce there's been a growing feeling of optimism and confidence about the club, the last two years have seen us endure stressful Augusts but there's a belief that this season we may be able to enter the closing weeks in a more relaxed frame of mind.
Some things never change though and on a predictably slow wicket Robbo lost yet another toss and Tenterden decided to make first use of the track.
Once again the early wickets did not come but neither did the runs and our opponents limped along at 2 an over until Yamma got the breakthrough when old man Sanj took a sharp catch at gulley.
Wickets then fell regularly and when the 8th man perished with the score on 99 there was a feling the job was done. Lessons should be learned here as we allowed Tenterden to reach 141 and as our run chase later proved those runs could have been crucial.
It was a solid bowling display and we took our catches well, ground flielding however was once again average.
Schmitty was the pick of the bowlers with 4, Horse 3, Yamma 2 and Wattsy 1.
All the bowlers did well - whilst the track was slow there was very little movement off the seam and taking wickets isn't easy, this is achieved through pressure and we did this successfully.
Another load up provided by Jim and Trudi - even retired umpires have taken to coming to OCC home games these days so they don't miss out on the outstanding fayre that's provided.
So our chase bagan; losing early wickets has become an unfortunate but predictable tale this season, Oz I'm sure will score runs when either the bowlers stop bowling straight or he gets his legs out the way and uses his bat !
Sanj entered and looked in great nick, he struck the ball firmly on his way to 24 until Sheds ran him out.
Whilst Sheds has had a breathing operation that may well have improved his speed between the wickets, his partner is 45 and partially blind, he was run out by yards.
Carl Lewis and Linford Christie in their pomp would also have been short !
So the pressure was back on; Wattsy stuck around but couldn't score and when Wess came in he too struggled to find the gaps against some good disciplined bowling.
Wess' departure was once again unfortunate, a full bunger from a spinner was middled into his pads and Tenterdens choked appeal was upheld and the finger went up.
This is the second time Wess has departed in this fashion - I struggle to see how spinners can get LBW decisions with full tosses, I also struggle to understand how from 90 yards away those on the bench can hear the edge yet an umpire from 22 yards can't !
Robbo added one more run to his league tally before he was out LBW and at 114-5 the winning line still seemed a way away.
More of a concern was the run rate that had crept up to 4 an over and in a low scoring game 4 an over is plenty.
Schmitty added some much needed impetous but he too departed with the job not yet complete, meanwhile at the other end Sheds had been compiling another big score.
He rode his luck and this was by no means his most fluent innings but he stuck around and took advantage of the lives he was given, he did play some good shots for his 72 but he perished with the scores level, a leg-bye in the 49th over saw us home.
The skip rounded his troops for a dressing down, disappointed that we had made such hard work of the victory, but a victory it was and another 16 points closer to safety.
A hard fought victory it was, but played in a good spirit. It's not often 100 overs cricket in this league pass by without the nonsense chat that sadly occurs, but credit to Tenterden for contributing to such a hard fought game without the unnecessary abuse that often exists. For once, we can look forward to a return match.
A good day all round for the club, both the 3s and 4s also recorded victories whilst the 2s got the better end of a draw.
A final word for our growing international fan base - Our lovable ex overseas, Josh Scott, began the week by writing a letter of complaint on the time it takes us to get results and match reports on the website. Josh old son ...................GET A LIFE !
So interested in our progress is Josh that he sets his alarm on Sunday mornings in Sydney so he can phone us to get the match facts, I'm told he rang me at some unearthly drunk hour and we had a 15 minute conversation, but sadly I don't remember.
