Saturday 1st XI - Match Reports
1st XI vs Ashford - Saturday 11th June 2005
Orpington - 240-5 (P Sheddon 111, W Woolmarans 47, P Gooch 41)
Ashford - 188 all out (P Schmidt 6/47)
Orpington win by 52 runs
On a typical bare, uneven, 4 paced deck, the OCC put together another solid display to rack up a further 20 points.
However a very un South African attitude from the skipper almost blew it before a ball was bowled. Ashford arrived with 8 players and tried hard to delay the toss and the start, the skip showed extreme sympathy with the oppo and was considering inserting Ashford. He was duly put in his place by yours truly and it turned out to be the key moment of the day as by the time Ashford's full allotment of personnel had managed to find clearly the most well hidden ground in Kent, we had rattled up 80 from a dozen overs.
Goochie led the charge with a quickfire 41 whilst Sheds settled into a more cultured mode finding gaps and running well.
After Goochie's departure there was solid support for Sheds from Wes who fell 3 short of his half century. Robbo who was stuck on 1 for what seemed like hours but then found the gaps for his 31 including a six that sailed fully 30 yards over the mid on boundary.
Shot of the day however goes to Wes for his reverse sweep slog for a one bounce four.
But the innings was dominated by Sheds who made his maiden first XI hundred and duly celebrated in style with a series of air punches. A terrific knock from a batsmen who has the potential to be a major force at this level.
Pabs and Pies had the impossible task of following the top 4 and the declaration was made at 240-5 from 46.
Ashford were positive from the start which always gave us hope of a maximum points tally, they rattled along at 5 an over until Pabs swung things our way with a great spell of economic bowling. But it was always going to be the spinners who made the difference and as pressure was built, wickets began to tumble.
The openers both hit 50's, in very differing styles, but there was very little resistance further down the order and the result was never in doubt.
Alex Harding bowled well and was rewarded with 2-38 from his 11 overs, a little more confidence earlier in his spells and he could turn a few games for us this season.
But as Sheds did with the bat, Schmitty did with the ball.
Despite developing the ability to bowl the odd bad ball, something that wasn't there last year, he also has the ability to go through sides and his spell of 6-47 from 16 overs was class.
Wes wrapped up Jack and it was all over.
Ashford 188 all out.
A good day all round for the club with hundreds also registered by Geoff in the loopys, and Sanj who seems to have found his level after all these years for the leafys.
Congratulations also to Wes for turning up earlier that 1.20, and to Doker who finally got a polite chuckle for his Alsatian joke after 4 weeks of trying !
Great day, great night !
