1st XI - Match Reports 1st XI vs Canterbury - Saturday 10th May 2008
Canterbury - 237/6 (50 overs - S Ingram 5-40)
Orpington - 82/10 (40 overs)
Canterbury won by 155 runs

The start of another league season, and the fixture computer through us up a tricky away tie first up at Canterbury. We knew it wouldn't be easy, and losing the toss on an extremely hot day and being asked to field didn't help.

Wess and Bradders opened up the bowling, on a flat looking track. Our hosts soon reached 50 without loss, but after a quick start, we started to reign in our oppos run rate, through bowling a good length and some excellent ground fielding. Yamma came on first change for Wess, and bowled extremely well for his 5-40 off 15 overs. A simple education here, bowl line and length, and be supported by good bowling, and rewards can come your way. Bradders finished his 15 overs in one spell, and perhaps deserved more than his 1 wicket, an excellent leg side stumping from Doker. Sam, in his first team debut at the age of 15, showed great promise in his 7 overs, only being undone by the destructive Jenkinson towards the end.

Overall Canterbury's 237 was about 40 more than we should have let them get. Although our ground fielding was good, we dropped some crucial catches and at this level it costs. Worse still, we should have picked up the 3rd bowling point and probably the 4th as well, so 2 points lost.

What was to follow in our batting was very disappointing. A lack of application, and some good Canterbury bowling, and we were soon in deep trouble. Pierre and Bradders showed some bottom order resistance, and David Lane stuck in well showing good application. But 78 all out was way way below par.

So overall 2 points, a good beating, and a disappointing start. Our season starts next week and we will need to improve. Good luck to Canterbury, they look well primed for another assault on promotion and who would bet against them this season? As for us, the happy memories of the end of last season are just that, we need to realise that we are in a tough league and performances all around will need to improve. We have the characters and ability to do it.
