1st XI - Match Reports
1st XI vs Lordswood - Saturday 3rd May 2008
Lordswood - 196/5 (45 overs)
Orpington - 164/9 (45 overs - Wessel Wolmarans 49)
Saturday saw us play our first home game of the season, and the Sun was out!
Lordswood, representing our 3rd Premier League friendly opponents, arrived at the OCC with a full side, and were duly inserted to bat first. The class of a premier league side showed in them compiling 196-5 of their 45 overs, in particular their strength in depth. Wess bowled quickly on a slow wicket, and deserved his early success. Sam followed from the top end, and fully deserved his 2-17 from 9 consistent overs. The rest of the bowling was mixed, Pabs showed some reasonably consistency and may once again show his hand with the ball in the league, Yamma bowled well in his second spell when he was given the slope he favours, but overall we were short in depth. The least said about Sheds' over [22 runs conceded] the better, but perhaps next Winter he will concentrate on his run up and line and length in Winter nets rathet than trying to knock people's heads off! Two other negatives, the fielding was below par, too many singles were conceded through slow reaction, and we dropped several fairly straight forward chances, something which will cost us dear in the league if we continue to do it. Finally, we bowled far, far too many no balls. These are demoralising for the side and we must endeavour to cut them out.
After the return of the OCC tea our reply commenced. Our final score of 160 odd was a decent effort, given the quality of our opponents. Wess was the pick of the bats, and continued his early season form with 49. There were contributions from several others, along with a mixture of poor shots along the way. We have a long way to go if we are to even consider maintaining our Div 1 status, but if we can build on the positive aspects and improve the others, we will have a fighting chance.
Overall it was a decent run out - thanks to Lordswood for playing the game in a good spirit.
